Departure:

Guide:

1. Day: Ljubljana
After arrival to the airport, drive to Slovenian capital city: Ljubljana. On a guided tour we discover the city through its architectural and cultural heritage, including the Orthodox Church, National and Modern Gallery, National Museum and square of Republic (place to celebrate Slovenian Independence) with House of Parliament. We will visit the colorful and lively Main Market, the old part of the city with Town Hall, Cathedral and Ljubljana’s famous the bridges: Triple Bridge, Cobbler’s and Dragon Bridge. The Ljubljana hill and castle give a fantastic view over the city.

We can let the impressions of Ljubljana sink in on the bus drive that will take us to the Western part of Slovenia; to Goriška Brda, a hilly microregion. It lies on the right bank of the Soča river, north and west of the Italian town of Gorizia, after which it is named.

We will have our first meal of local delicacies and stay overnight.

2. Day: Goriška Brda
Breakfast with a view on a beautiful landscape will provide appetite to discover this phenomenal microregion, which enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate and is protected from the strong Bora wind, which frequently blows in other parts of the Slovenian Littoral. Besides grapes, cherries are the most important agricultural product in the municipality, followed by apricots, pears, figs, and plums. Small amounts of olive oil are also produced.

The wine varieties grown in Brda include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Pinot gris, and Sauvignon vert.

Before starting the degustations we will visit the little villages of Medana, known for its annual Poetry and Wine Days festival, Šmartno, declared a cultural heritage monument, where can enjoy a typical Slovene coffee and go up a view tower, which represents the central point of Brda to enjoy the breathtaking view in all directions and Dobrovo, with its Renaissance castle overlooking Goriška Brda.

Then it is time for some degustation of local wines and accompanying local snacks while listening to fascinating winemakers explaining their craft. The wines and winemakers cannot be more different from one another but they all share the passion of creating something special.

3. Day: Štanjel- Vipava
After breakfast we drive to the traditional village of Štanjel – a real jewel of the Karst region. The Romans turned the top of the hill into an ancient fort. While walking through the narrow streets, the houses built in stone are telling you the story of stonemasons. On one of the local »smoked ham factories« we will learn about smoked ham production and taste it while sipping a local drink made of best Karst red wine. Then we drive to Vipava valley, where will will degustate indigenous grape varieties like Zelen and Pinela and try the 4th colour of wine - ‘orange’ wine. Hopefully in good spirit we go back to Goriška Brda for a gastronomic meal.

4. Day: Maribor- Jeruzalem-Ormož
Saying goodbye to Goriška Brda we travel to the Eastern part of Slovenia to have some free time in Maribor, the second biggest city of Slovenia. Cobbled laneways open out to spacious public squares surrounded by beautiful old buildings. A little north of the Drava river the old town comprises of notable features including the Castle Square (Grajski Trg) with its fascinating Castle and Museum, the Main Square (Glavni trg) with the Plague Memorial and the Town Hall Rotovž, the Maribor Cathedral with an observation tower, the Maribor Synagogue, art galleries and theatres plus of course many fine bars, cafes and restaurants where you can grab a bite. One cannot miss out on beholding the reportedly oldest vine in the world (over 400 years old!) at the river. Behind the vine is the Old Vine House which has a great information centre highlighting the regions winemakers and their wines. Take a leisurely walk along the riverfront where you also see the defense towers and the Jewish part of the city.

When visiting another winemaker we have our choice of trying some of the whites produced in the area (Riesling, Grüner Silvaner, Šipon, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Traminer, and Muscatel) or red (Pinot Noir, Blue Franconian).

We drive to the fairy tale looking area of Jeruzalem-Ormož to have a dinner and spend the night.

5. Day: Jeruzalem-Ormož
We will have drive through Jeruzalem-Ormož to enjoy the specific landscapes before we will visit a producer of pumpkinseed oil, a Slovene specialty. It is a characteristically dark color oil with a pleasant nut flavor. Much more than delicious oil used for seasoning dishes and salad dressing, it contains healing minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids that the body needs to function normally. We will hear all about it at one of Slovenia’s most known producers and of course try it out with some fitting snacks.

After we will transfer you back to Ljubljana or the airport.
